The Client
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, one of the leading pediatric healthcare systems in the country, is a not-for-profit organization that benefits from the generous philanthropic and volunteer support of the community. With 430 licensed beds in two hospitals and more than 450,000 annual patient visits, Children's is nationally recognized for excellence in cancer, cardiac, neonatal, orthopedic and transplant care, as well as in many other pediatric specialties.

The Challenge
When lives are in the balance, the criticality of high availability and disaster recovery is measured with virtually every breath. Children's was in the process of implementing an electronic clinical information system that would provide doctors, nurses and other caregivers with electronic access to patient information. This initiative accentuated the importance of high availability and disaster recovery for Children's.

The Solution
Jack Storey, CIO of Children's, and his team turned to Logicalis and VERITAS to design and implement a disaster recovery solution that leveraged the hospital's existing hardware investment for the secondary data center site. The storage management software infrastructure integrates multiple server platforms and operating systems, storage platforms, and applications while utilizing the heterogeneous support of VERITAS NetBackup, Storage Foundation, and Volume Replicator. The team also developed a centralized enterprise-wide cluster management solution for high availability. Consultants from both Logicalis and VERITAS helped with the architecture design and implementation phases.

The Bottom Line
Jack Storey and his team needed a set of partners to look to for their disaster recovery and high availability solution. Working together, Logicalis and VERITAS provided Children's with a solution that allows them to give uninterrupted care to their patients no matter the circumstances. "We basically posed the question to look at our different hardware and software needs, and we just kept coming back to the VERITAS solution because of its hardware independence," said Jack Storey, Vice President and CIO, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.

“The assistance from VERITAS Consulting, combined with Logicalis Services, shaved time off the actual deployment. Their partnering efforts were able to resolve the implementation efforts much more quickly.”
