Information once flowed in a predictable pattern and IT was manageable. Then, as information became essential to all businesses, data centers became crowded and inefficient. More and more servers were added. And that meant more switches, cabinets and cables as well.

So IT leaders contained server sprawl and costs through virtualization and a converged infrastructure. Next, they began to turn to cloud computing to meet user expectations by increasing agility and allowing IT to do more with less.

By 2015, enhanced management tools and automation will eliminate 25 percent of labor hours associated with IT services, and that reduced labor will increase budgets for innovation – which is estimated to drive more than $1 trillion in increased business revenues. By 2015, new revenue generated by IT will determine the annual compensation of most new Global 2000 CIOs. And by 2020, more than one-third of all digital information created annually will either live in or pass through the cloud.

There has never been a more crucial time for CIOs to be thinking strategically about their role in the organization, and how they can enable their company to save money, increase productivity and operate more effectively.
